Hi! I hope your weekend was fun-filled. Summer is just flying by, right? Anywhooo, I was perusing over at Sophistimom and came across a brilliant post on picky eaters. I loved everything she had to say on the subject-- very informative and nicely written. A favorite quotable from the post "This is what I've made (for dinner). You may choose to eat it, or you may choose not to eat it, but I am not making anything else. Our next meal will be served tomorrow morning at 7:00".
My little toddler has yet to show me any real pickiness in her short life, but I very well could experience this in the future. What are your thoughts on the subject? Do you have picky eaters in your household? What do you do to get your kids to eat? Were you a picky eater as a kid and later grew out of it? Let's discuss!

You know me, trying to grow out of it at 29 years old. Not that I have kids yet, but I'm a big fan of just not giving them the option to not like things. Even when they're tiny, they say to give them the nasty baby food at least 21 times (way more effective than 20) before giving up on it. I think the same thing applies as they get older. I've noticed that more often than not kids think they hate something when really they're just unfamiliar with it, so I like the idea of exposing them to a wide variety of foods from the time they're small. That way they don't freak out at the thought of something other than chicken nuggets or pb&j when they're older.
That makes perfect sense, Haley. I like the idea of exposing your kids to a wide variety of things.
Well, I am a very picky eater-I hate to say it. I have definitely gotten MUCH better with trying new things the older I have gotten, but have come to realize that there are just certain things I don't like, and that's ok! ;-) My children (two girls), are pretty picky. My oldest is much worse than my youngest. The oldest refuses to try new things, even if it smells good but looks funny she does not like the idea of tasting it. It is ALWAYS a challenge for me, and I am sometimes better than others. My hard and fast rule at this point in their little lives, is if you don't like what I make for dinner than you will go to bed hungry. They get that now. I try to mix up the menu at home, but not sure it really is working. So, I have no advice on this subject. My kids are selective with vegetables, love some fruits, and like their mom, love ALL sweets! ;-) If you have any advice let me know! (Sorry this was so long)

I liked what you said about sticking to your guns and if they don't like what you've made then they'll go to bed hungry. This is so smart.
Have you heard of the book Deceptively Delicious (Google it)? One of my good friends turned me on to it and I love everything that the author has to say and the recipes as well. Check it out!
I know toddlers like to have a sense of control in their lives. So I let my toddler choose what she eats for breakfast and lunch (within in reason of course) and then she has to eat what I make for dinner. It has been working out pretty good.
